Here’s to the future of AI!

Hello, friends, and welcome back to what was an eventful week in artificial intelligence and financial services news, and this time around we're packing a huge wallop of information across the relatively small surface area of our newsletter: in other words, this is a high-impact edition of AI & Finance. This week, AI spending continued to surge even as doubts started to gnaw at fixed income markets regarding the technology-a dynamic we touch on at several points in AI Intelligence and then cover in depth in our Looking Back column. AI Intelligence also features new models from OpenAI, Google and Nvidia. AI & Finance continues a recent trend of thinking about gradually shifting public opinion on AI. AI Education looks at agentic VoIP, the convergence of several technologies and one of the places where artificial intelligence rubber meets the business road. Databricks' huge funding haul headlines our top 5 VC column, and that's only a taste of this week's content. ... CHECK IT ALL OUT BELOW!

AI & FINANCE™ | NEWS FOR THE WEEK ENDING 8/21/26

Erosion is a slow, but provocative process. This was brought home to us this summer as we hiked around Appalachia climbing around stunning natural arches and rock shelters-over the course of centuries and millennia, mere wind and water will move mountains. And in some parts of the world, the results are stunning. Welcome to AI & Finance, where you'll find artificial intelligence's proliferation across the financial moving a good deal faster than erosion works upon limestone and sandstone formations. While technology seems like it can change in the blink of an eye, and human beings are capable of changing opinions, feelings and... CONTINUE HERE

AI EDUCATION | What Is Agentic VoIP?

Sometimes change doesn't happen incrementally. It happens all at once. It's not the slow force of erosion or glaciation. It's an avalanche. And that's the way telecommunications has been since we were a child. When we were young, in our earliest memories, most people still had wall-mounted rotary phones with scratch notepads next to them in case we had to write things down. Cellular phones were called car phones and air phones back then and were at least the size of a small suitcase. The only people who had linked telephones to a computer screen, outside of a small number of early modem... CONTINUE HERE

Top 5 VC Deals of the Week in AI (8/19/26)

This week our overall AI venture capital activity accelerated once again from recent weeks, with all five of our listed announcements coming in over $500 million and 12 announcements total coming in over $100 million. The biggest announcement, per FinSMEs, came from a familiar name, San Francisco-based Databricks, which raised a $5 billion strategic funding round for "for continued innovation across Lakebase, its serverless Postgres database built for AI agents, Genie, Databricks' AI coworker that turns business data into trusted answers and actions, and Unity AI Gateway, for multi-AI governance and cost controls," according to its announcement. Our second-place announcement was from the... CONTINUE HERE

AI INTELLIGENCE | News For the Week of 8/20/26

Artificial intelligence news this week was dominated by an unusual combination of technological acceleration and growing recognition of the risks and costs accompanying it. OpenAI slowed work on frontier models after cybersecurity concerns, while simultaneously launching a safer version of ChatGPT for teenagers and previewing new enterprise privacy protections. Nvidia deepened its role not merely as an AI chipmaker but as a financier of the infrastructure required to run advanced models, while Broadcom reportedly pursued another enormous AI financing package. Meanwhile, Washington focused more closely on China's data advantage, Brazil launched a strategically significant national AI-computing initiative, Anthropic pushed forward with controversial AI... LOOKING BACK | The AI Investment Story Moves from Equity to Debt

For most of the generative artificial intelligence boom, investors have been encouraged to think about AI primarily as a technology capable of making other things cheaper. Developers can write code faster. Financial institutions can accelerate research, compliance and documentation. Customer-service departments can automate interactions. Manufacturers can optimize supply chains. If artificial intelligence eventually generates the productivity improvements its proponents anticipate, its ultimate economic legacy may indeed be profoundly deflationary. Getting there, however, is proving extraordinarily expensive. This summer, the economics of artificial intelligence have become an increasingly important part of the AI conversation. The debate is no longer simply about whether models will... CONTINUE HERE
