More specifically, the Advent season, for those of us who follow the Roman Catholic calendar, a celebration of the birth of the Christian messiah, Jesus, whose short life permanently altered the course of the Western world-advent, in this sense, would literally translate to "coming" or "arrival." We're also writing to you amid another, secular, technological kind of advent, that of new forms of artificial intelligence. Does that sound overly enthusiastic and utopian, a kind of Moore's Law, megahertz-driven flavor of millenarianism? We'd point out that we've not only noted a crescendo in talk (and venture capital funding) of projects aimed at artificial general intelligence (AGI) and superintelligence, but also started to hear more concrete timelines for when a technological intelligence with human capabilities will actually be among us. An "if" question has become a "when" question. This week's venture capital funding took a holiday break, as there were only three days of deals published to pull our announcements from. Nevertheless, there were two transactions in excess of the $100 million threshold. The top reported deal, per FinSMEs, came from Germany's Black Forest Labs, a visual AI company, which raised $300 million in a Series B.
